A 10-Year-Old's Marching Orders for the Upcoming School Year

Tony Mase here with an article (below) I think you'll really enjoy...

Interestingly enough...

Of all the articles I've ever written and made publicly available...

This article, which I first published a couple of years ago under the title An 8-Year-Olds Marching Orders for the Upcoming School Year and republished last year under the title A 9-Year-Olds Marching Orders for the Upcoming School Year, has received more positive and, I might add, downright enthusiastic feedback than practically all the other articles I've ever written and made publicly available combined.

So much so, that with just a couple of weeks to go before a new school year begins here, I've decided to once again update and share it with you again this year...

Enjoy! :-)

To your success,

Tony

A 10-Year-Old's Marching Orders for the Upcoming School Year

===============================================

In my opinion, based on my own personal experience, kids function best when they're real clear about exactly what's expected of them in any given situation or under any particular set of circumstances.

Every year since he first began school, in the day or two prior to the beginning of each new school year, I've sat down with my son, who's now ten years old, to "lay down the law", so to speak, about exactly what I expected of him in school and to issue him his "marching orders" for the upcoming school year.

This year won't be any exception. Although my expectations for him haven't changed over the last several years, with a new school year about to begin, I've been thinking about them again in preparation for our annual talk together and thought I'd take a few moments to share them with you.

Here they are:

Expectation #1 - I expect him to behave himself and treat others as he'd like to be treated.

The first and single, most important thing I expect of him in school is to be polite, mind his manners, and treat others as he'd like to be treated.

All three elements of this expectation are very closely related and because he understands *why* they're important, he has no trouble whatsoever living up to them.

Here's why...

One summer day, shortly before he started school, we were driving somewhere (probably a toy store :-)), when, seemingly out of nowhere, he asked me what I knew about this "God thing", as he phrased it.

As simply as I could put it, I shared with him my personal belief...

Essentially...

That One is All and All is One. That one Intelligent Substance manifests itself as what appears to be many elements of the material world.

Simply put...

We're all made from the same Stuff, a Thinking Stuff.

After I finished my simplified explanation of this concept, he sat there quietly for a moment or two, staring out the car window, then he looked at me and said...

"Daddy, that makes sense!"

And, with "ah-ha" written all over his face, he added...

"So that's why you're always telling me to love my neighbor as myself and to treat other people the way I want to be treated, because we're all one, right Daddy?"

At age five...

He got it! :-)

Expectation #2 - I expect him to do his best.

Unlike many, if not most, parents and teachers, I could care less what his grades in school are...

Really!

You should see the look on people's faces, especially his teachers, when I tell them this. :-)

So, what do I expect?

Simple...

I expect him to put everything he's got into everything he does and do the best work he can possibly do.

Throughout his writings, Wallace D. Wattles, best known for his classic masterpiece The Science of Getting Rich, repeatedly stresses the importance of doing all you can do each day and doing each separate act in the most perfect manner possible.

That's *exactly* what I expect of him!

If, every single day, he does *all* he can do that day and if, every single day, he does each separate thing he does in school in the most *perfect* manner possible, with the purpose of learning...

And that, in the opinion of his teachers and/or the school system, earns him an "A"...

Great!

If it earns him a "B"...

Great!

If it earns him a "C"...

Great!

If it earns him a "D"...

Great!

If it earns him an "F"...

Great...

I really don't care! :-)

Why?

Because doing everything you can do each day and doing each separate thing you do in the most perfect manner possible with a purpose is the secret to success in anything and if he just learns this one lesson and applies it, he'll be successful in life regardless of what his grades in school are.

Expectation #3 - I expect him to have fun.

Life is meant to be fun, not a bore, and I expect him to have fun in school.

Now...

Please understand...

I don't expect him to be the "class clown" or a "wise guy".

However...

I do expect him to look for ways to make his "work" fun.

If he learns how to make his "work" fun, he'll never have to "work" a day in his entire life.

Well...

There you have them...

My ten-year-old's "marching orders" for the upcoming school year.

In prior school years, because he's been very clear about exactly what I expected of him in school and because he's been very clear about exactly why I expected those things of him, he's never failed to live up to my expectations and make me very proud of him...

I don't expect this school year to be any different. :-)

3 More Surefire Ways to Stay Broke

- by Tony Mase

============================

Are you broke?

Want to stay that way?

I can help you...

In a previous article, I shared with you three *surefire* ways to stay broke. Just in case they weren't enough to do the trick for you, here are three more surefire ways to stay broke:

Surefire Way #1 - Never imagine yourself as being anything other than broke.

Whenever you think about yourself and your financial situation, always imagine yourself as being broke. Never, not even for a single moment, imagine your financial situation as being any other way.

Why not, you ask?

Simple...

Should you slip and begin imagining yourself as having money, even for a moment, you stand the very real risk of setting off the unseen forces of the Universe to begin moving money in your direction and you wouldn't want that, would you?

Of course not!

By the way...

Just so you know...

Of all the things you could do to stay broke, continuing to imagine yourself as being broke is by far the most powerful.

Surefire Way #2 - Never talk about having money.

Regardless of whether you're mentally talking to yourself or talking out loud to someone else, always talk about being broke. Never, whatever you do, talk about having money.

This very simple action, repeated consistently, will, over time, program your subconscious mind for staying broke and thus, you'll gain your subconscious mind's automated assistance in your quest to stay broke.

At a loss for words?

Let me help you out here. :-)

Here are just a few of the many things you can say to yourself or others that'll practically guarantee you'll stay broke:

- Every single time I start getting ahead, something always happens to set me back again.

- I can't afford it.

- I don't know where the money is going to come from to pay this.

- I just can't seem to get ahead financially.

- I never have any money.

- I'm always a day late and a dollar short.

Tip! If all else fails and you can't come up with anything else to say, taking about recessions and hard economic times are another proven way to mentally condition yourself to stay broke.

Surefire Way #3 - Never do anything that could even possibly change your financial situation.

In his book The Personal Power Course, Wallace D. Wattles, best known for his classic masterpiece The Science of Getting Rich, wrote:

"Do not sit down and try to ATTRACT the thing you want to you; but begin to move toward the thing you want, and you will find it coming to meet you. Action and reaction are equal; and the person who steadily and purposefully moves forward with one thing in view becomes a center toward which the thing he seeks is drawn with irresistible power..."

Now...

Wallace D. Wattles intended these words for those who wanted to create wealth in their lives, not those who wanted to stay broke.

So...

Since you want to stay broke...

You're strategy is simple...

Do just the opposite!

Sit around trying to *attract* money into your life and don't, the key word here is *don't*, whatever you do, do the least little thing that could even possibly begin to move you toward having more money; otherwise, you may well find more money coming to meet you.

Remember...

"Action and reaction are equal; and the person who steadily and purposefully moves forward with one thing in view becomes a center toward which the thing he seeks is drawn with irresistible power..."

Therefore...

If you want to stay broke...

The last thing on Earth you want to do...

Is steadily and purposefully move forward with more money in mind and thus become a center toward which money is drawn with irresistible power.

Right?

Right...

No doubt about it! :-)

3 Biggest Reasons Why Your Kids Don't Listen to You

- by Tony Mase

========================================

As the father of an active ten-year-old, for one reason or another, I'm frequently in contact with other parents. During our "sideline" conversations, I'll very often hear one of them say something to the effect of, "my kids just don't listen to me".

Though I usually do my absolute best to keep my big mouth shut whenever this subject comes up, I can't help but think to myself...

Did you ever wonder *why* your kids don't listen to you?

Here, in my humble opinion, culled from many years of observation and personal experience, are the three biggest reasons why they don't:

Biggest Reason #1 - You don't listen to them.

Call it whatever you like but, the bottom line is, whatever you put out into the Universe comes back to you. Therefore, conversely, what you don't put out into the Universe doesn't come back to you, does it?

Of course not.

And with this in mind, did you ever stop to think that maybe the single biggest reason your kids don't listen to you is...

Surprise!...

Because you don't listen to them?

Here's the deal...

In my experience, I've found kids of all ages are a whole heck of a lot smarter than most folks give them credit for being and have some really neat "stuff" to say and share with you if you'd just take the time to listen to them.

And maybe...

Just maybe...

If you'd take the time to listen, *really* listen, to what your kids have to say to you and take a sincere, genuine interest in it, your kids would take the time to listen, *really* listen, to what you have to say to them and take a sincere, genuine interest in it.

Is it worth your time and effort to find out?

I certainly think it is. :-)

Biggest Reason #2 - You don't do what you say you're going to do.

In other words...

To put it bluntly...

You lie to your kids!

I don't know any better way to put it.

If I had a dollar for each and every time I've been in a toy store (and I'm in toy stores a lot, I might add :-)) and heard a parent say to their son or daughter, "no, you can't get it today, we'll come back tomorrow", I'd be far richer than I already am.

Now...

Let's be honest with one another here...

When you say to your kids something like (and this is just one example of hundreds I could use here), "we'll come back tomorrow", do you *really* intend on doing it?

Odds are, from what I've seen, you don't.

Therefore...

It's a lie...

Plain and simple!

And how long do you think it is before your kids figure this out?

Not long, I promise you.

Is it any wonder then you're kids don't listen to you?

I think not.

Speaking of and closely related to not doing what you say you're going to do is...

Biggest Reason #3 - You don't keep the commitments you make.

Let me let you in on a little "secret" here...

In a child's mind, the word "maybe" has all the force of "we're definitely going to do it".

So...

When one of your kids tells you, for example, there's a certain movie they'd like to see and they ask you if they can go see it, when you respond with something like "maybe we'll go see it on Saturday", guess what?

That's right...

Knowingly or unknowingly...

You just told them you're going to see it on Saturday.

And when Saturday finally rolls along and you don't follow through on your commitment to them, guess what?

You got it...

You've just given them yet another justifiable reason not to listen to a word you say.

Now, all this being said, some degree of your kids not listening to you can be written off as "kids just being kids" or their "marching to the beat of a different drummer", so to speak.

However, more often than not, to very loosely paraphrase our old friend William Shakespeare...

The fault, dear parent, is not in our kids, but in ourselves.

Well worth pondering.

As a matter of fact...

Even better...

Well worth doing something about!

3 Tips for Getting More from The Science of Getting Rich

- by Tony Mase

© Tony Mase - All Rights Reserved

==========================================

Wallace D. Wattles' nearly one hundred year old classic masterpiece, The Science of Getting Rich, has recently become *THE* book to read on the subject of getting rich. However, most of those who read this incredible book won't get near as much from it as they could.

Here are three tips that'll help you get more from it...

Tip #1 - Stay away from edited and/or revised versions.

Since The Science of Getting Rich was originally published in 1910, a number of edited and/or revised versions of it have been published both online and offline.

Besides some having slight changes of title, most, if not all of these edited and/or revised versions contain changes in the wording of the original book by Wallace D. Wattles ranging from minor to major in a so-called attempt to "modernize" and/or make it more "readable".

You can sometimes recognize these edited and/or revised versions of The Science of Getting Rich by a slight change in title from that of the original. Other times, you'll find someone has added his or her name as a co-author or editor of the book.

Unfortunately, there are a whole host of others out there where the title is the same as the original and there isn't a co-author's or editor's name listed, yet the text of the original book has been substantially edited and/or revised.

Personally, when I want to know what a particular author has to say, I want to read his or her own words and not those of someone else. This is especially true in the case of Wallace D. Wattles' writings.

In my opinion, any change of wording, however minor, takes away from the original meaning of what Wallace D. Wattles wrote and thus changes our understanding of it.

Therefore...

I strongly encourage you stay away from edited and/or revised versions of The Science of Getting Rich and stick to the original.

Tip #2 - Look up words you don't understand.

I know this sounds like simple common sense, but you'd be surprised at how many people don't do it. I can tell by some of the questions I get.

Occasionally, as you read The Science of Getting Rich, you'll come across words you may not understand or don't make sense to you in the context in which Wallace D. Wattles used them.

None of us knows the meaning of every word there is in the English language. Many words have multiple meanings. And, keep in mind, Wallace D. Wattles wrote The Science of Getting Rich nearly one hundred years ago. Many words that were in common usage then are no longer commonly used today and many words that were used back then were used with a different meaning than the meaning we'd attach to them today.

A good example of this is the word "check". If you look up the word check in a dictionary, you'll see it has a number of meanings. One of the meanings is to examine something to see if it's true or satisfactory. Another meaning is to stop or slow something down.

In Chapter 9 of The Science of Getting Rich, Wallace D. Wattles wrote:

"But you can check all this by starting a negative impression in the Formless Substance."

In this case, Wallace D. Wattles is using the word check to mean stop or slow down. In other words, he's saying...

But you can stop or slow all this by starting a negative impression in the Formless Substance.

Although the word check was commonly used to mean stop or slow something down when Wallace D. Wattles wrote The Science of Getting Rich, it's not a common use of the word today.

If you didn't know the word check had multiple meanings, or if you didn't know the word check was commonly used with this meaning back then, it'd be easy for you to misinterpret what Wallace D. Wattles was saying.

Tip #3 - Apply what you learn.

Here's the deal...

You can read The Science of Getting Rich hundreds of times. You can study it until you're blue in the face. You can memorize it, philosophize, and talk about it to your heart's content. However, until you apply what you learn from it, you're not going to get the results you're seeking from it, PERIOD!

Now...

I know, at first glance, it seems like there's an awful lot in it to apply. However, the simple truth of the matter is there really isn't. In reality, there are only a tiny handful of concepts you really need to apply.

And...

If you want results from The Science of Getting Rich, it's *vitally* important you understand...

It's your *application* of this tiny handful of concepts, not your knowledge and/or understanding of them, that'll make the difference in your life...

All the difference in the world, I might add! :-)

Wallace D. Wattles on How to Stop the Flow of the Creative Process Toward You

"... you can check all this by starting a negative impression in the Formless Substance. Doubt or unbelief is as certain to start a movement away from you as faith and purpose are to start one toward you. It is by not understanding this that most people who try to make use of 'mental science' in getting rich make their failure. Every hour and moment you spend in giving heed to doubts and fears, every hour you spend in worry, every hour in which your soul is possessed by unbelief, sets a current away from you in the whole domain of intelligent Substance."

- Wallace D. Wattles, The Science of Getting Rich

How Much Does That Sofa Really Cost You?

How to Own Your Paycheck Again!
=================================

Let's talk about consumer debt. You know, the kind you rack up because you really need stuff.

Your sofa is looking pretty nasty. It's covered with Kool-Aid stains and throw pillows are hiding threadbare spots where the tufting peeks through. You even had to throw down some plywood to keep the pillows from sagging.

Time to go out and buy a new one, right?

Not if you don't have the cash.

Here's why that new sofa is going to cost you a lot more than the $800 sticker price if you go into consumer debt to buy it.

Let's assume you buy the sofa as well as matching loveseat and end tables for a grand total of $2000. You finance your purchase through the furniture store for three years at an interest rate of 21.45% (let's leave out the "no interest for two years" deal for a minute).

Your monthly payments will be... drum roll, please... $75.

"Wow", you think. "That's pretty affordable." Sure it is.

Until you count the true cost of that sofa.

Let's assume you're 30 years old and you're going to retire at 65. Let's also assume you have access to a 401(k) that your employer matches at 50%, you can earn a 10% average return on investments, and your combined federal and state tax brackets are 20%.

If you pay for your furniture with cash and invest the $75 a month in your 401(k) for three years instead, you'd have $4,330 more in your account at the end of the three years (plus your sofa). Now keep that $4,330 in your 401(k) without any additional investment and in another 32 years, at retirement, it will have grown to $83,112.

So, basically, your sofa cost you $2,000, plus $700 interest, plus $83,112 that would have grown over 32 years in your retirement account.

Final sticker price: $85,812.

Yikes!

Here's an alternative plan: hang on for another two years, save $80 a month in a money market mutual fund or savings vehicle that earns at least 4%, and use cash to pay for your new living room set.

Final sticker price: $1,920

Here's an even better alternative plan: hang on for another two years, save $80 a month, and after you buy the sofa, put $80 a month in your 401(k) instead (you were already living without it for two years).

Final sticker price: $1,920, plus an extra $815,699 in YOUR bank account by age 65.

Now what about those "no interest for two years" deals? Well, you can certainly take advantage of those, if you're disciplined enough to pay off the balance in less time. Most people aren't.

You can use this strategy for every major purchase you make.

The cost of consumer debt is a big deal, when it's compounded by time, interest, and 50% employer matching.

So next time you hit the furniture store and the salesman is telling you, "It's only going to cost you $75 a month", you'll know better. Tell him or her, "Nope! It's actually going to cost me around $85 grand. See you in two years."

Avoid consumer debt, and you're well on your way to a much stronger financial future.
